In a thrilling conclusion to the first-ever IMSA Airbnb Endurance Challenge at Sebring International Raceway, Oscar Tunjo and Valentino Catalano emerged victorious after a dramatic turn of events saw their main rivals falter late in the race.

Driving the No. 1 Gebhardt Motorsport USA entry, Tunjo and Catalano capitalized on a misfortune suffered by the No. 95 Toney Driver Development Ligier JS P325 Toyota, which experienced a catastrophic fuel pump failure with only minutes left on the clock.

Tunjo began the race strong, leading from the outset and maintaining a healthy gap. "I was just focused on staying ahead," Tunjo remarked about his race strategy. However, Lincoln Day, the second-fastest qualifier, was hot on his trail, burning rubber in an attempt to close the distance.

Just past the half-hour mark, Day spun out while pushing for faster laps after setting the race's fastest lap, which allowed Tunjo to extend his lead to nine seconds. Leading every lap during his stint of over an hour, Tunjo's steady performance laid a strong foundation for the team, but not without challenges.

During their pit stop, the Gebhardt team faced a setback when they left a tire unattended, leading to a drive-through penalty. "We had to react quickly, but thankfully the timing was in our favor," said Catalano, who took the wheel following the stop. As fate would have it, the only full-course yellow of the race came out just as they were serving their penalty.

This development placed Catalano in a strategic position as the No. 95 car, under the control of Wyatt Brichacek after their driver change, found itself navigating traffic from a lapped car. Brichacek initially managed to build a gap of over seven seconds, but Catalano kept his foot on the gas and steadily closed the distance.

Unfortunately for the Toney Driver Development team, their race took a turn for the worse when the No. 95 car began to slow down with just four minutes (or two laps) remaining, eventually finishing in sixth place due to the fuel pump failure. "We were in a good position, and it’s frustrating when you’re so close to the finish line," lamented Brichacek after the race.

Meanwhile, Patrick Kujala from the No. 77 Forte Racing Ligier team was making a strong push, finishing second overall and clinching the top spot in the Bronze Cup alongside his co-driver Brian Thienes. "We had a solid race, but the leaders were just too quick today," Kujala said.

Garret Grist and Ari Balogh rounded out the overall podium, driving the No. 30 Toney Driver Development Ligier, a testament to the competitive nature of the event and the skill present in the field.

The IMSA Airbnb Endurance Challenge features four two-hour races within the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge’s LMP3 class. As the series progresses, the remaining three endurance events will also integrate the BMW M2 Racing class, beginning at the Circuit of The Americas from May 7-9.

This inaugural race not only showcased thrilling racing but also highlighted the importance of strategy and mechanical reliability in a fiercely competitive environment. Teams and drivers will be looking to adapt quickly as they prepare for their next challenges in this evolving series.
