George Russell secured a commanding victory in the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race, surviving an early thriller with Lewis Hamilton to claim his second win of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The Shanghai International Circuit witnessed a spectacular opening sequence as Russell and Hamilton traded positions repeatedly in the first five laps. Hamilton, starting fourth, quickly moved through the field and engaged in an intense wheel-to-wheel battle with his former Mercedes teammate.
Russell ultimately finished 0.6 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with Hamilton completing the podium in third place. Lando Norris claimed fourth, ahead of Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, while Max Verstappen endured a disappointing race, finishing ninth after starting eighth.
The victory extends Russell's championship lead to 11 points over Antonelli as he maintains his perfect start to the new season following his triumph in Australia just six days earlier.
Hamilton made an aggressive start from fourth position, immediately challenging the leaders at the opening corner. The Ferrari driver quickly dispensed with Norris before setting his sights on Russell, creating one of the most entertaining opening sequences of recent memory.
Midway through the first lap, Hamilton had taken the lead, but Russell responded by reclaiming the position at the penultimate corner. The battle continued relentlessly as Hamilton used the tow down the main straight to regain the advantage at Turn 1, showcasing how the new regulations and battery management systems have transformed racing dynamics.
The momentum swung back to Russell at the end of lap two as he dove underneath Hamilton at Turn 15, only for Hamilton to strike back at the beginning of lap three. By lap six, Russell made his decisive move, launching his Mercedes underneath Hamilton's Ferrari at the second-to-last corner.
From that point forward, Hamilton's challenge faded as Russell began extending his advantage. The Ferrari driver soon found himself under pressure from Leclerc, who was making his own charge through the field.
"I think Lewis is struggling," said Leclerc before executing his move for second position on lap eight.
The Ferrari teammates then engaged in their own battle, with Hamilton attempting to reclaim the position through the opening corners of lap nine. However, Leclerc maintained his advantage and didn't hold back his frustration on team radio.
"Does he know how wide these cars are or not?" said Leclerc, clearly irritated by Hamilton's aggressive defending.
A safety car period triggered by Nico Hülkenberg's breakdown with five laps remaining shuffled the order during the pit stops. Antonelli received a 10-second penalty for an earlier collision with Isack Hadjar, dropping him from third to eighth in the final classification.
The restart saw Russell leading from Leclerc, with Norris ahead of Hamilton. The Ferrari driver managed to reclaim third from Norris on the penultimate lap, but Russell's victory was never in doubt.
"Lewis did an amazing job, and he caught me off-guard, but he was using his experience," said Russell after his triumph.
Hamilton reflected on the intense battle and what might have been: "It was a close battle and their speed on the straights was a little bit too much. I put up a good fight, but I killed my tyres. It is a much better car, and I have been a part of developing that. But I was in the lead at one point, so to finish third was not the greatest, but I tried and will do my best again later."
Russell's victory sets up an intriguing dynamic heading into Sunday's main Grand Prix, where he'll start from a strong position to extend his championship advantage. The thrilling sprint race demonstrated that the 2026 season promises to deliver exceptional wheel-to-wheel racing, particularly between the former Mercedes teammates who showed they've lost none of their competitive edge.
